Wickham Bishops

About

Wickham Bishops is a village and civil parish in the Maldon district. Situated between Maldon and Witham, Wickham Bishops was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086. The name 'Wickham' means 'dwelling place with a dairy farm' while 'Bishops' means that the land used to belong to the Bishop of London.

On the western side of the village stands St. Bartholomew's church while 'The Street' - the main road through the village - features a large village hall, an Italian resturant, two hairdressers, a health food shop, two beauticians, a garage and The Mitre public house. There is also a small library and doctors surgery located in the village.

With plenty of footpaths and countryside walks around, and through, the village visitors can easily explore the area. Close to Wickham Bishops is Shut Heath Wood Nature Reserve in Great Braxted which is popular with the locals and dog walkers due to the abundance of Bluebells which flourish in the reserve in Spring.

With easy access to Witham train station, Wickham Bishops is a popular village for those who commute to London.
