Jane Malyon had a ‘lightbulb’ moment, which made her start-up The English Cream Tea Company!
With a background in catering and PR, Jane’s mind sprang into action when she heard an elderly lady say: ‘I’ve had my last afternoon tea’! The woman felt unable to travel to a posh hotel for an afternoon tea and had thought she’d never have one again, although they were her favourite.
Entrepreneurial in nature, Jane had a lightbulb moment and wondered why anyone wasn’t delivering afternoon teas direct to people’s homes? A quick Google search later, she found no-one was offering the service. She also couldn’t believe the web domain, ‘The English Cream Tea Company’ was still up for grabs. By the end of the day the web address was hers and a clear business plan was in hand.
Following careful research on how to deliver perfectly fresh afternoon teas with the yummiest scones, clotted cream and smoked salmon sandwiches the company was launched. Jane and her husband Roger had moved out to the Rodings in Essex to get more space to develop their enterprises. Side by side the couple prepare deliciously indulgent and incredibly tasty afternoon teas, hampers and gifts to customers all over the UK.
Never one to rest on their laurels, the dynamic duo has also launched the ‘Secret Sconery’ the perfect place for visitors to hideaway in a barn in the Essex countryside and tuck into a very special afternoon tea. There’s now own-brand teas and jams to add to The English Cream Tea Company’s collection. Plus, etiquette lessons and a best-selling book on the subject ‘Scone or scone: the essential guide to British afternoon tea’. They’ve broken world records for hosting the largest tea party (it required 1600 teapots!) and now Jane has become a TikTok sensation with the company’s posts on afternoon tea, gaining over 1 million likes!
