Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a leisurely stroll on these scenic, countryside trails. Dig out your map, dust off your walking boots and don’t forget your inner explorer!
The Essex Way – This trail is 82 miles long, beginning in Epping Forest and finishing on the Essex coast in Harwich. Too long to complete in a day - unless you're a keen cyclist - but easy to break up into smaller walks for day trips.
Saltmarsh Trail – Explore the wild side of the coast in the Maldon District by following the 75-mile Saltmarsh trail. Enjoy panoramic views of the Blackwater and Crouch estuaries and the North Sea. Keep your eyes peeled for seals and admire the ancient St Peters chapel when you pass through Bradwell-On-Sea.
The Flitch Way – This traffic-free and relatively flat trail was formed on a disused railway line. The Flitch Way is 15 miles long, from Bishop Stortford to Braintree, making it perfect for a day trip. Complete the trail on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Town to Sea Trail – For those interested in art, we recommend heading to Colchester and discovering the Town to Sea Trail. Immerse yourself in the heritage of Colchester and then follow the trail to Hythe Quay. Look out for the steel artworks along the way – there are 14 to find!
Grape and Grain Trail – This trail brings together the finest local breweries, vineyards and distilleries. Cheers to a tour that all adults are bound to enjoy as they learn how to brew beer and grow the finest grapes for a lovely bottle of vino. Download the Grape and Grain Trail map here.
For those wanting to follow a trail and keep the kids happy, we recommend The Gruffalo Trail, located at Thorndon Country Park and The Stick Man Trail, located at Weald Country Park. They are sure to get your little ones excited and lost in their imagination.
