Situated in north-west Essex is the picturesque medieval town of Saffron Walden. With it's many historic and colourful buildings, showcasing its rich heritage as a market town it is the perfect place to amble and discover some of Essex's secret gems.
Morning - Park in Swan Street car park and explore the pretty market town of Saffron Walden on foot, home to the largest turf maze in the world. Don't miss the spectacular, cathedral-like parish church of St Mary the Virgin where Lord 'Rab' Butler, of the famous 1945 Education Act, is buried in the churchyard. There are plenty of independent cafes and restaurants to choose from for a spot of lunch and market days are Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Afternoon - After lunch, discover the 'secret' Bridge End Gardens. Tucked away down a narrow path between tiny, ancient cottages, the gardens were created in 1840 and designed by Francis Gibson as a series of interlocking rooms, each has its own unique character. You can pre-book a visit to the Fry Art Gallery next to the gardens and enjoy works of art by local artists and, for a small entrance fee, you can visit the charming Saffron Walden Museum depicting life in the area in years gone by.
Pop into the 16th century Eight Bells in Bridge Street for a drink or a bit of supper before heading home and enjoy some great hospitality in modern, stylish surroundings.
