With a relatively flat landscape, pretty countryside, a 350-mile coastline and an abundance of footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing the county, Essex is ideal to explore on foot. We have a number of established walking trails to try which we have split into the below categories to make it easier for you to choose. Many of these start and finish at destinations with a train station if you prefer to leave the car behind. If you have a specific starting point in mind, use the pink search bar by 'type' and 'area'. Or if you prefer to ramble, check out an interactive map from Essex Highways showing all the Public Rights of Way.
Looking for a challenge? Then why not walk all or part of the 81-mile long Essex Way, starting in Epping and finishing in the historic port of Harwich. Similarly, embark on The Saffron Trail, stretching from Saffron Walden to Southend. We have split this trail into 7 legs so you can either choose to walk part of it, or string them together over a few days.
Disclosure: All our walks are provided with directions as guidance only and routes may be affected by weather, construction, closures or other factors. Please observe the countryside code, avoid private land and take care when crossing roads.
