About

Snapping the Stiletto: Campaigning for Equality x Colchester Chinese Cultural Society

Since December 2020 Snapping the Stiletto has been meeting with women from the Colchester Chinese Cultural Society who have generously shared their stories with us and each other. They have each told us about their lives in China and the rich traditions they were brought up with, and taken us through their journeys to the UK and experiences living here in Essex.

The group decided they would like to share our conversations in an exhibition. It was important to each of them that they represent their different ethnic groups. There are 56 ethnic minorities in China, each has a unique culture. All of the women involved in this exhibition are from a different ethnic group. The women chose to showcase their cultures by displaying their traditional costumes and sharing their stories alongside them.

We’re open every day 12-4pm in the old Laura Ashley shop on Trinity Square.

Contribute your own stories to the exhibition and try your hand at zhezhi (Chinese paper folding).

The online exhibition will launch 1 June 2021.
