About
Brent is one of the very last of a long line of steam powered tug boats which trace their origins back to the first use of steam power in the 1840’s. Built as part of the War effort in 1945 for the Admiralty, she didn’t see war service, but was sold to the Port of London Authority, who used her to help maintain the Thames as a navigable waterway and later to tow lighters and barges in the Royal Docks. She is a precious and unique historic relic of London’s maritime history, which deserves to be restored and made working once again.
The Brent has been involved in many Royal occasions over the years, she towed the firework barge along the River Thames at Her Majesty The Queen's Coronation, and attended on the Thames for the Silver Jubilee. Now for the Platinum Jubilee and Local History Week, the Brent is open for a series of activities and events, including:
Wednesday 1 June 10:00 to 16:30, children's activities and quiz
Thursday 2 June 21:00 to 22:30, Evening event to watch the Lighting of the Beacon
Friday and Saturday 3 and 4 June, 10:30 to 16:30 - open day
Sunday 5 June 10:00 to 16:30 - open day.
Events are free, but donations are required for the evening event and gratefully received for the other events. The Steam Tug Brent Trust took over the ownership of the vessel in 2011. Largely unchanged in appearance from her working days, the Trust wants to restore her back to operating condition as she was, complete with working steam engine and boiler.
