Wicked Spirits? Witchcraft & Magic in Colchester Castle. Graphic of the outline of Colchester Castle filled with symbols connected to witchcraft.

About

Essex has the dubious honour of being the English county most associated with the witch-persecution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Is this distinction justified? How ‘bad’ were the Essex witch-trials, compared with other English counties? And how does Essex compare in the broader European context?

Join us for an evening with Professor Alison Rowlands from The University of Essex, who will provide a comparative perspective on this aspect of our regional history.

The Castle will be open from 5 – 7pm, so you have time to explore Wicked Spirits?, browse the magical merchandise on sale in the shop and even grab a drink.

'Wicked Spirits? Witchcraft + Magic at Colchester Castle’ opens on July 16th and runs to January 6th 2023.
