About
Colchester Castle's latest exhibition is produced in partnership with the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic and sensitively brings to life the stories of those that suffered in one of the Castle's darkest periods, when is was used as a prison for those suspected of being a witch.
During the 1500s and 1600s hundreds of people were imprisoned in the Castle, suspected of being a witch whilst they awaited a trial. Conditions were terrible and many died before their case could be heard. This exhibition looks at the stories of the victims rather than those who persecuted them, examining five stories of a 300 year period to explore how atitudes and the law changed in this period.
The exhibition also covers attitudes to magic and superstition both from history and in the present day.
'Wicked Spirits? Witchcraft + Magic at Colchester Castle’ opens on July 16th and runs to January 6th 2023.
Please note: The displays will contain content suitable for a family audience, but due to its sensitive nature, parental guidance is advised.
