Heritage Open Days is the UK's largest free festival celebrating history and culture. Every September, thousands of buildings and places open their doors to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate our rich heritage. Many locations and attractions in Essex get involved each year.
The Gibberd Garden
On Sunday 8th September, from 2pm to 6pm, The Gibberd Garden will be free for all to enter! If you’re in the mood for a charming Sunday afternoon, this is the place to be. Enjoy the beauty of the gardens designed by architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, and marvel at the meticulously crafted landscapes, sculptures, and stunning flora. Once you have explored the gardens, step inside the Gibberd Rooms and discover an array of contemporary art and design. Finish off the outing with a coffee and sweet treat at the Café in the Barn!
Bocking Windmill
Climb to the top of this 300-year-old windmill on Sunday 8th September! Bocking Windmill was built in 1721 and has a rich, intriguing history. Visit this beautiful heritage attraction in the Essex countryside and delve into its past.
Colchester Castle
Visit Colchester Castle for their annual open day on Saturday 14th September. Admission is free of charge. As part of Heritage Open Days, visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore Europe's largest Norman Keep and delve into over 2,000 years of fascinating history. Exciting activities include chariot racing and the chance to fire a replica ballista.
Maldon & Heybridge Heritage Harbour
Enjoy a day of activities by the water at Maldon & Heybridge Heritage Harbour on Saturday 14th September! Attend talks at the Maldon Little Ship Club, including ‘Thames Barge – Past and Present’, ‘Meet the Future of our Maritime Industry with Steph Valentine’, and ‘Huw Wahl's Arts Council film, "Wind Tide and Oar"’. What’s more, you can climb on board Thames Barges Thistle and Hydrogen, or book a guided tour onboard Steam Tug Brent.
