With Essex blessed with 350-miles of coastline it is good to know how to stay safe when visiting. Here are some tips so you can relax and enjoy your stay.
- The Essex Coast has many man-made hazards such as piers, groynes and harbour walls. Please take care and do not swim near man-made structures or run, climb, jump or dive off them. Be cautious when walking on wet or uneven surfaces and look out for sharp objects.
- Inflatables are very dangerous when used in the sea. If you bring an inflatable to the beach you must make sure that it is securely held by an adult so it cannot drift out to sea. Always make sure children are within reach and NEVER take one out in strong winds or currents.
- The tide can change quickly so check the tide times before entering the water and ensure that any children playing on the beach are not in danger from the incoming tide. Learn how to spot a rip current and if you find yourself caught in one, swim parallel to the beach. If planning to walk along Essex’s many saltmarshes and mudflats you should also check tidal times to ensure you do not get trapped or stuck in the mud.
- Waves can be great fun but can also prove dangerous, so it is worth being able to recognise the different types. For more information check out the RNLI site her.
- When walking near cliffs, stay away from the edge and keep your dog on a lead. In an emergency call 999 and call for the coastguard.
- Always read and follow the safety signs at the beach. If there are flags make sure you swim between the red and yellow flags. Click here for more information on flags.
Child Safety
Many of our beaches have a Child Safety Scheme which offers your children a free water-proof and tear-proof wristband to help relocate them with parents/guardians.
