Radical ESSEX is a project re-examining the history of the county in relation to radicalism in thought, lifestyle, politics and architecture, shedding light on the vibrant, pioneering thinking of the late 19th and 20th Centuries. The project celebrates the crucial role Essex has played in the history of British Modernism and its utopian ideologies.

Radical ESSEX was founded in 2016 one of ten Arts Council England and VisitEngland funded projects as part of the nationwide Cultural Destinations programme, which supported arts organisations to work with the tourism sector to deliver projects that maximise the impact culture has on local economies. Radical ESSEX is a partnership, led by Focal Point Gallery, originally in collaboration with Colchester Council, Essex County Council, Firstsite, Southend Borough Council and Visit Essex.
