Make some Mersea Memories

Approached by a causeway from the mainland, cut off at high tide, Mersea is a place you have to plan to get to.

Morning -  Most visitors head straight for West Mersea, the island’s undisputed capital, with its small, independent shops, cafes and a charming local museum.  Simple pleasures here include relaxing on the beach, crabbing from the jetties, watching the activity at the boat-repair yards or just taking in the dramatic, wide skies and estuary views.  For lunch you can feast on fresh local oysters and other seafood from one of the many restaruants and cafes or take-away some good old fashioned fish and chips to eat alfresco.

Afternoon - In the Summer months, you can pre-book a sailing, canoeing or paddle boarding session at Mersea Island Watersports, on the waterfront or, if you prefer something a bit less challenging, a few minutes drive away is East Mersea where you'll find Cudmore Grove Country Park, a beautiful nature reserve covering over 102 acres and boasting expansive views over the Colne and Blackwater Estuaries.

It's the perfect place to paddle, play and picnic, birdwatch, beachcomb and let imaginations run wild with friends and family.  As well as being a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the park is rich in historic features including WW2 pillboxes and the remains of a blockhouse fort and a cliff that has produced 300,000-year-old fossils.
