About
A truly unique screening of the 1969 film 'The Battle of Britain' in Hangar 5 at London Southend Airport. With an all-star cast including Sir Laurence Olivier, Trevor Howard, Sir Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York, the film tells the story of the summer and autumn of 1940 when the Royal Air Force defeated the Nazi Luftwaffe, forcing Adolf Hitler to cancel his plans to invade Great Britain.
The film is notable for its spectacular flying sequences, much of which was filmed in the skies over south-east England.
As RAF Rochford, London Southend Airport was an RAF Fighter Command base during the Battle, so this is a unique opportunity to watch the film at an airfield used by 'The Few'.
The 'cinema' will be inside airport Hangar 5 with Vulcan XL426 parked outside. We will put power on the Vulcan before the film starts so visitors can see its bomb doors open and close, and its flying control surfaces move.
To capture that real cinema feel, there will a doughnut, ice cream and popcorn kiosk as well as a licensed bar selling beers, lagers, wines and soft drinks.
Secret Cinema at the Vulcan is taking place after the Government's scheduled lifting of social distancing requirements in England. Should, though, the restrictions be extended, meaning we cannot hold the event, full refunds will be made on all ticket purchases.
The film screening will start at 8.00 pm. Free car parking will be available.
Ticket purchasers will be sent full event details 14 days beforehand and a further reminder 2 days before the event.
Secret Cinema at the Vulcan is part of the 2021 Southend Film Festival.
