About
Battlesbridge is located in the parish of Rettendon. The village, which has an antiques centre, a guest house and two tea shops, straddles the River Crouch. The bridge over the tidal river was kept in repair from the earliest days by the Bataille family, hence the name of the hamlet. The village is approximately 10 miles from Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea.
The Battlesbridge conservation area boundary is loosely drawn around the historic core of the settlement where the principal historic buildings are largely associated with functions relating to the river. It encompasses marsh and drainage land on both sides of the river. The bridge provides the focus at the centre of the conservation area. Other important structures and buildings include former mill buildings, the Barge Inn, farm buildings and cottages.
