About

Back for its second year, this Roman Festival is held in the heart of Colchester, once known as Camulodunum, and capital of Roman Britain. Brought to life by Britain's top re-enactment groups, The Vicus (the 'village'), Britannia, The Ermine Street Guard and a host of other fabulous contributors including our very own Colchester Roman Society and experts from the The Castle Museum and The Roman Circus Centre.

There's something for everyone: fearsome gladiators battling it out in the arena or local tribesmen attacking Roman soldiers, falconry, archery, and some fabulous engines of war. High-quality crafting, donkey rides, dressing up, chatting to enthusiastic and knowledgeable re-enactors who are always keen to share their passion. Traders and artisans will be filling our Romano-British market and there's a programme of talks, panel discussions, and workshops in the Talk Tent.

This year, international best-selling author Lindsey Davis will be joining our Book Tent for the first time, along with several other major authors who bring the Roman world to life through fact or fiction who will all be there to chat about their work and sign books: Alison Morton, Harry Sidebottom, LJ Trafford, Alex Gough, Simon Turney, Nick Holmes and Ruth Downie.

With plenty of room to picnic and play and a wide choice of lovely food and drink, including honeyed wine (mead) and - dear to the Romans' hearts - oysters brought to us by Richard Haward's Oysters (The Company Shed) from Mersea.
