Three re-enactors dressed as Romans

About

Meet the Romans!

FREE outdoor event. FREE guided tours at 12 noon, 1 pm and 2 pm.

The Colchester Roman Society will be in the Gardens sharing their stories and displays about everyday Roman life in Britannia and what it was like to be in the Roman Army.

£3 entry fee for 'over 11's to the Visitor Centre, payable at the door (2 children per responsible adult)

The site of the Roman circus was identified in 2005 and it represents the only known Roman circus in Britain. It was a monumental structure and it may have seated up to 8,000 spectators: it would have been used as a venue for spectator sports, including chariot-racing. It was built in the early 2nd century AD and seems to have been in use for about 150 years.

The Roman circus site and visitor centre include outdoor and indoor displays and a cafe. The visitor centre is off Roman Circus Walk and it is accessible by car from Butt Road or by cycle/on foot from Circular Road North. There is disabled parking and limited visitor parking on site as well as two public car parks nearby in Butt Road and Napier Road.

Roman Circus Café serves freshly-ground coffee, teas, hot chocolate, sandwiches, cakes and snacks.
Babies and children welcome - our small selection of toys are free for little ones to play with.
Wheelchair / pushchair accessible. Free Wi-Fi in circus centre and café.
